Video Skills Test

I interviewed Amy Birch for my video about tuition fees. I found this video relatively easy to do, I used a flip camera to film the piece and I used Windows Movie Maker to edit it and add a title. I then uploaded the video to youtube and embeded it into my blog.

According to Home Office and their research development it shows that burglary seems to have increased on some items and decreased on others. Certain possessions are being stolen more than they were. From the graph above it is clear that computer equipment for example has risen by 7% and jewellery has also risen by 3%. On the other hand items such as mobile phones and toiletries have dropped.

Citywire has a database where people can find the worst hit places for burglary home insurance claims and know how to secure themselves better, as places like London are the worst hit areas.

As for crime overall according to the British Crime Survey being a victim of crime fell to 21.5%, whereas the previous year’s figure was 22.4%.Vehicle related theft has also fallen since 2009 by 12% and vandalism has fallen by 6%.
The largest falls in crime between 2009 and 2010 were criminal damage and vehicle vandalism.
People are becoming more vigilant in the present day with neighbourhood watch schemes playing a key role in society.
However although crime has fallen it is still a huge issue across the UK.

View Lancashire Evening Post Stories in a larger map

This is a map of 4 Lancashire Evening Post news stories.
To do this I created my own google map and located each area of where the stories happened.
Each story is plotted on the map with a significant icon to represent part of the story e.g. The Post Office story has an envelope.
I have ensured that each story is linked to the LEP website aswell as linking to another website which has some relevance.

Skills Test - Images

Original Photo (click to see full size)
The original photo was taken of the C&T building at the University of Central Lancashire. I chose this building because I believe that it portrayed the University sign well as it was clear and large. Also the building was quite colourful and I believe this made it stand out. I have cropped each photo to the desired width and height (pixels) using the photoshop elements editor.
100x100
The first crop (100x100) is a thumbnail picture which captures roughly the same elements as the original picture only alot smaller with parts of the original photo cropped out.

400(wide)x300(high)
The second crop (400x300) again captures the main part of the photo (that being the UCLan sign) cutting out anything that may not be relevant e.g. benches.

200(wide)x500(high)
The final crop (200x500) has been centered onto the UCLan sign as the main image and all other parts around the sign have been cropped.

Say goodbye to going out at 11pm, you'll be returning at 2am.

Well, I said I would do it and I will do it now ....

Officially eating my words.

What on earth is the government doing??

All over the papers yesterday it stated that pubs and clubs were now closing at an earlier time, now our generation are used to going out at 10/11 lets face it thats when everything starts getting going. But we are in for the long haul many of us dont come home until 5 in the morning ... probably later.

But now according to a new government legislation to be passed last orders at pubs will be 11pm, on all nights, which means everyone will end up being shipped out at 11:30pm.

And the nightclubs will now close (at the latest) 2am. This may not be an issue for some
people but its really annoyed me and quite a few others.

Apparently violence has increased according to police reports and the pubs and clubs arent really benefiting from the late closures.
Not only this but drinks promotions are also going to be stopped.

Which means no more 75p drinks in Assembly anymore, they are completely taking the biscuit !!

What are students on a low budget supposed to do now ?? Its going to be like a saturday night every night .... expensive and now everywhere will be closing early.

Oh the joy ... The Toffs need to leave it alone !!

I for one agree with Homer Simpson.

The General Election

Thursday May 6th is the big day for these 3 men.
The day we decide who is going to run our country.

There has been alot of controversy over the past couple of months, each one of these parties have been throwing abuse in every direction at each other. The expenses scandal completely shocked the whole of the electorate and trust in politicians was at an all time low.

But who can we truly trust ??

Personally, I believe David Cameron and the Conservatives can deliver and put "Broken Britain" back together again, but hey that is my opinion and if at some point I have to eat my words, I will do.

Things havent gone well for Gordon Brown since he became Prime Minister, lets be honest, the floods, the recession, the banking crisis and now the latest "bigot" comment has landed him in the biggest pile of rubbish (to be polite) ever, especially when the election is only a few days away. I take my hat off to the clever journalist who caught that :)

Nick Clegg seems to be doing very well, the Liberal Democrats have caught up to Labour and the Conservatives significantly, more than they have ever been before, and to be honest good on him. But .... I just think they Clegg is away with the fairies, I mean why join the Euro ?? keep the pound !!
And as for taking away our nuclear weapons, what a joke !!

But again, before anyone has a huge fit at me, it's just my opinion.

This year is going to be a close one, its good to finally have an exciting close election for once.

St. George's Day

HAPPY ST.GEORGE'S DAY !!

Today is the day to be ENGLISH. We only get one day a year to celebrate all that is English and I believe people should celebrate it. Its not racist Its simply patriotic.

According to legend our patron saint, died on the 23rd of April. He is remembered for being a soldier in the Roman army, slaying a dragon and saving the princess.

I find it quite outrageous how England dont really celebrate as much as other countries celebrate their patron saints. In actual fact many people dont even remember the day !!

So, enough is enough, Its time to go out there
with your English flag, and be proud.

The New Doctor...

Flickr.com

Attention all Doctor Who fans today is the day where we all find out what Matt Smith has to offer as the new Doctor.

Personally, I dont think anyone can top top the spectacular David Tennant. Maybe I'm biased because i found him very attractive as the Doctor but then again his acting was superb.

We saw his character change throughout really showing the different emotions the Doctor had. Anger, Despair, Love and along with the comedy element it could be watched by many ages.
The storylines were amazing of course thanks the the brilliant script by Russell T. Davies.

It may sound harsh but Christopher Eccleston who played the Doctor before David Tennant (in my opinion) was dreadful, a complete cocky attitude surrounded him, yes this may have been his version of the Doctor but it was rubbish.

It was the first time i had watched Doctor Who and the viewing was diabolical.
That's why i thought i would give it a go when David Tennant played the role and i loved it.
I felt quite pathetic when i found myself in tears when he left the show in that powerful ending, and i was quite persistant that i would not be witnessing the new Doctor's arrival.

But i guess it is worth giving it a go... :)

3D Films... Are They Really Worth The Money??

klandreth.glogster.com

On my latest trip to the cinema i went to see the fantastic Alice In Wonderland in 3D. It was a brilliant experience.
There wasn’t as much 3D as i had expected but nevertheless i felt like i could reach out and touch the leaves that were falling from the trees and the flying rocking horses... yes i said it.

But there was a small matter of the cost. For 2 people to watch this film it cost £21.50 for one screening, i had the small luxury of student discount, however which brought it down to £19 but then i got swindled into buying a loyalty card which brought the price back up as that cost me £1.99.

So we got given our 3D glasses (of which you are supposed to recycle at the end... hmm yeah right) and went to the food counter, i could only pay by card if it was over £4.50, so for nachos and a drink it cost me £6.50.

Around £28 altogether and i had been in the place 10 minutes.

Granted i hadnt gone on orange wednesdays but is the 3D experience really worth it??
Whilst sat watching the trailers i must admit i was taken aback by the whole novelty of 3D (This was my first 3D screening) and i was amazed at how these glasses could show someone such a thing.

But i could buy the DVD for almost half the price when it comes out.
It is plain and clear that pretty soon all films are going to be in 3D but even after watching that brilliant film im not sure if it is worth the price... i enjoyed the film mainly because of the great characters and comedy they brought individually.

Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter were absolutley superb.
Tim Burton's idea of wonderland was also spectacular, but if i had gone and seen it in 2D it would have been the same characters and the same view of wonderland.

Dont get me wrong if there is a film out there in 3D that i want to see i would love to go and see it but especially for students like myself i wonder how long the prices are going to remain like this before the big wigs realise that this is too expensive for alot of people.

I could go on a night out for £28 including the taxi home...

The Future Of Journalism*

The media has always played a huge part in society. Since the beginning newspapers have always been the first to let people know what is going on in the world.

However with the development in technology broadcasting became a huge part of the media. Many thought that this would indeed destroy newspapers but instead broadcast and print worked hand in hand and neither harmed eachother. With the ever growing interest in celebrity social life and reality TV shows that were born out of this, magazines also flourished, and this became the ultimate in media.

But now, newspapers are beginning to close their doors and shutting down their printing presses, because online journalism has emerged and swept up internet users, into a world of free, fast, news that people can get now, instead of waiting for the paper, the next day.

But is this the death of print journalism??

Some may argue that this is an inevitable fact, that indeed newspapers are dropping like flies and soon there will barely be one left. Of course, most of the national newspapers such as "The Times" and "The Guardian" are online. So their loyal readers will inevitably be reading their news via the websites. Which is one of the reason that newspapers are continuing to disappear. Practically all of their readers... are going online for their news.

Yet, this does not mean the end of journalism as a whole. The media has developed quickly and efficiently over the years, with news from around the world avaliable by the click of a mouse or a click of a button, news is as important as ever.

Social networking sites are becoming increasingly helpful for journalists. "Facebook" is one of the huge sites that have people talking about anything and everything, including what they have done during the day.

Although newspapers do seem to be struggling with the current media climate it does not mean to say that the future of journalism is dead.

You could say its the start of something bigger...
